Max Boufathal

Realizes sculptures of divinities, monsters, objects of natural history. He does not hesitate to dig into the aesthetics of the ” cultures of the world ” to realize forms which take into account all the experiences of the modern materials to create new artefacts where get involved tribal art and consumerism. He puts in relation myths, politics and different systems of faiths through a subjective exploration of his ” internal black “, his smashed culture and of the notion of community.

He uses black and colored plastic bags, braided and worked on the traditional way of the african or oceanian weaving. The high stature of these characters standing in the gallery (2,35m) and the position of their body give to the spectator the feeling of the alive presence of Martin Luther King, Marcus Garvey and Malcom X. Nevertheless, those who do not know the history of these men and their political positions, will see in these sculptures some hyper contemporary characters, the heroes of video games or science fiction films… The heads, molded in some plaster and coated with black shoe polish are not without suggesting the case of street children, become small shoeshine boys.
